Our Veterinarians

Dr. Ian Voelzel

Dr. Ian Voelzel

Dr. Ian Voelzel is from Austin and graduated from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. From 2002 to 2003, he did a small animal rotating internship at Oklahoma State College of Veterinary Medicine. From 2003 to 2004, he did a small animal surgical internship at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, and from 2004 to 2005, he was an instructor of elective surgery at Washington State College of Veterinary Medicine. He joined our team as a veterinarian in 2007 but began his relationship with the hospital as a Westlake High School student, working in our boarding kennel.

Being a veterinarian has been his calling for as long as he can remember, and he has been driven by his desire to extend the joy that people receive from the bond they have with their pets. His special interests include orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and critical care.

He enjoys life with his family and his black Lab, Rio; his yellow Lab, Tucker; and his Chihuahua, CB. Anywhere in the great outdoors—hunting, fishing, or at a college football game—is where you will find Dr. Voelzel when he isn’t caring for your pets.

He believes that Westlake’s cooperative approach to medicine amongst doctors, staff, and specialists allows us to offer high quality, advanced medical care to our patients.

Dr. Brent Rains

Dr. Brent Rains

Dr. Brent Rains hails from Rio Vista, Texas. He is a 1998 graduate of Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and joined our team in 2001.

His interests in biology and medicine coupled with the enjoyment he gets from helping people and solving problems is what led him to the veterinary field.

Dr. Rains has a special interest in brachycephalic airway syndrome and dentistry. He, his wife, and their daughter share their home with three cats: Lilly, Fluff Muffin, and Mr. Fluffy Pants.

Dr. Angela Asbury

Dr. Angela Asbury

Dr. Angela Asbury is a Michigan native who graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. She joined the team at Westlake Animal Hospital in 1994.

Her desire to combine her love of people and their pets along with her passion for medicine led her to pursue a veterinary career. She practices with a special interest in internal medicine and “end-of-life”/hospice care.

Dr. Asbury comes from a large Greek family and lives with her husband and two daughters as well as their pets, Mickey, the beagle; Pele, the Chihuahua; and three cats, Saturn, Claude, and Mouse.

When she’s not at work, you can find her spending time with her family and close friends, participating in a form of horse riding called dressage, sailing the lakes of northern Michigan, or going for a run.

She feels that a multi-doctor approach to medicine and patient care and a special understanding of the human–animal bond is what makes Westlake Animal Hospital special.

Dr. Amy Thomason

Dr. Amy Thomason

Dr. Amy Thomason is a native Austinite and a 2007 graduate from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She joined our team in 2011.

The challenge of medicine and her marvel at the strength of the bond between humans and their pets drove her to trade in a career in marketing for her dream of practicing veterinary medicine. She is very interested in dentistry, internal medicine, and wellness care.

Dr. Thomason lives with her husband and their German shorthaired pointer, Riley, as well as two horses, Gabby and Isabelle. Her days away from the hospital are spent with her family and friends, participating in competitive horse riding, and painting.

She is inspired by Westlake’s team approach to quality medicine and our excellent staff.

Dr. Barbara Wensel

Dr. Barbara Wensel

Dr. Barbara Wensel is originally from Kansas and graduated from Kansas State University in 1977. She joined our team in 1985. She grew up watching her father practice veterinarian medicine and knew that she wanted to follow in his footsteps. She is especially interested in the preventive care side of medicine.

Dr. Wensel has four cats: BW, Herz, Zipper, and Mr. Gray. She is very active in the community and spends much of her free time volunteering for Meals on Wheels and at The Paramount Theater.

She believes that Westlake’s kind and caring staff and a team of doctors that work together are the components that better the quality of life and the health of our patients.

Dr. Jennifer Schneider

Dr. Jennifer Schneider

Dr. Jennifer Schneider is an Austin Transplant who grew up in the small town of Denver, North Carolina in a house full of Golden Retrievers and other small pets. She received her B.S. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 and continued her education at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, receiving her degree Veterinary Medicine in 2018.

Professionally, she is passionate about preventative medicine and the opportunity to integrate Eastern and Western medical modalities to best help heal patients. She began her studies of acupuncture in Guangzhou, China and currently holds a certification in Small Animal Acupuncture from the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. She believes that modern medical diagnostics and treatments can be combined with acupuncture for the most comprehensive care for patients. She enjoys many aspects of general practice and has special interests in managing chronic medical conditions including arthritis and endocrine diseases.

Her initial interest in science and biology combined with a lifelong fascination and respect of animals encouraged her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.  She values the unique bond between people and their pets and is dedicated to caring for each unique individual.

She is married to a wonderful man who is a mechanical engineer in town. In her spare time, she enjoys going to fitness classes at the YMCA, dinner dates with her husband at the delicious restaurants in town, and spending time with her lovable ferret friends Howard and Sidney.

She is thrilled to be a part of the Westlake team and work together to help care for your pet!

Dr. Charlene Carrera

Dr. Charlene Carrera joined Westlake Animal Hospital in December 2019. She is new to the Austin area, having practiced small animal medicine in San Antonio since graduation from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. Veterinary medicine is her second career and she has a bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Liberty University in Virginia.

Dr. Carrera has two Shiba Inu, Kuma and Hana, and shares a tankful of fresh water fish with her boyfriend, Randy.

Dr. Carrera has special interests in soft tissue surgery, ultrasonography, and ophthalmology. She enjoys the collaborative environment fostered among the doctors and staff at Westlake Animal Hospital and appreciates the human-animal bond. During her free time she likes exploring Austin, hiking, cooking, traveling and spending time with her family in the Rio Grande Valley.
