Our Veterinarians

Dr. Ian Voelzel

Dr. Ian Voelzel

Dr. Ian Voelzel is from Austin and graduated from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. From 2002 to 2003, he did a small animal rotating internship at Oklahoma State College of Veterinary Medicine. From 2003 to 2004, he did a small animal surgical internship at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, and from 2004 to 2005, he was an instructor of elective surgery at Washington State College of Veterinary Medicine. He joined our team as a veterinarian in 2007 but began his relationship with the hospital as a Westlake High School student, working in our boarding kennel.

Being a veterinarian has been his calling for as long as he can remember, and he has been driven by his desire to extend the joy that people receive from the bond they have with their pets. His special interests include orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and critical care.

He enjoys life with his family and his black Lab, Rio; his yellow Lab, Tucker; and his Chihuahua, CB. Anywhere in the great outdoors—hunting, fishing, or at a college football game—is where you will find Dr. Voelzel when he isn’t caring for your pets.

He believes that Westlake’s cooperative approach to medicine amongst doctors, staff, and specialists allows us to offer high quality, advanced medical care to our patients.

Dr. Brent Rains

Dr. Brent Rains

Dr. Brent Rains hails from Rio Vista, Texas. He is a 1998 graduate of Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and joined our team in 2001.

His interests in biology and medicine coupled with the enjoyment he gets from helping people and solving problems is what led him to the veterinary field.

Dr. Rains has a special interest in brachycephalic airway syndrome and dentistry. He, his wife, and their daughter share their home with three cats: Lilly, Fluff Muffin, and Mr. Fluffy Pants.

Dr. Angela Asbury

Dr. Angela Asbury

Dr. Angela Asbury is a Michigan native who graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. She joined the team at Westlake Animal Hospital in 1994.

Her desire to combine her love of people and their pets along with her passion for medicine led her to pursue a veterinary career. She practices with a special interest in internal medicine and “end-of-life”/hospice care.

Dr. Asbury comes from a large Greek family and lives with her husband and two daughters as well as their pets, Mickey, the beagle; Pele, the Chihuahua; and three cats, Saturn, Claude, and Mouse.

When she’s not at work, you can find her spending time with her family and close friends, participating in a form of horse riding called dressage, sailing the lakes of northern Michigan, or going for a run.

She feels that a multi-doctor approach to medicine and patient care and a special understanding of the human–animal bond is what makes Westlake Animal Hospital special.

Dr. Amy Thomason

Dr. Amy Thomason

Dr. Amy Thomason is a native Austinite and a 2007 graduate from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She joined our team in 2011.

The challenge of medicine and her marvel at the strength of the bond between humans and their pets drove her to trade in a career in marketing for her dream of practicing veterinary medicine. She is very interested in dentistry, internal medicine, and wellness care.

Dr. Thomason lives with her husband and their German shorthaired pointer, Riley, as well as two horses, Gabby and Isabelle. Her days away from the hospital are spent with her family and friends, participating in competitive horse riding, and painting.

She is inspired by Westlake’s team approach to quality medicine and our excellent staff.

Dr. Barbara Wensel

Dr. Barbara Wensel

Dr. Barbara Wensel is originally from Kansas and graduated from Kansas State University in 1977. She joined our team in 1985. She grew up watching her father practice veterinarian medicine and knew that she wanted to follow in his footsteps. She is especially interested in the preventive care side of medicine.

Dr. Wensel has four cats: BW, Herz, Zipper, and Mr. Gray. She is very active in the community and spends much of her free time volunteering for Meals on Wheels and at The Paramount Theater.

She believes that Westlake’s kind and caring staff and a team of doctors that work together are the components that better the quality of life and the health of our patients.
